Protective Styles: Do's and Dont's

A lot of women are now opting to wear their natural hair out. This decision is mostly prompted by the need to prevent the damage that comes with constantly getting perms. However, daily maintaining natural hair can become a big challenge, especially with harsh changes in weather which can cause hair dryness, making them brittle and more susceptible to breakage.

Another problem many women have with wearing their natural hair out is the lack of versatility. It can quickly become boring to stare at yourself in the mirror every day, wearing the same hairstyle. As a result, many women now wear protective styles like weaves and crochet braids in between wearing out their hair.

Weaves and other protective styles should however not become permanent fixtures on us. It is my personal opinion that we women should refuse to be defined by the hairstyles we wear. I have had conversations with women who would rather be caught dead than wear their natural hair.

They take out an installation and they put in another one immediately. While I have no problem whatsoever with weaves, it is disconcerting that many women do not feel good about themselves without one or they feel that as a result of their job, they have to wear their hair a certain way.

This usually is counterproductive to growing healthy natural hair. It is important to never lose sight of why we choose to wear weaves in the first place. Alopecia, which is technically another word for baldness, is not fun! It is better to have hair than to end up bald. Even if there are ways to treat hair loss, they are not cheap!

So below are certain things to bear in mind as you install that next weave.

Make sure your stylist does not braid your hair tight
I have found that some stylists habitually braid hair tight. When you install your weave on top of a tightly braided hair, expect to lose hair when you take it out. I have used the same stylist for the past couple of years because I find that her braids actually grows my hair. She knows how to braid with the right amount of firmness that not only makes the weave last but it stimulates hair growth.

Do not leave a weave in for months at a time
I have also found that some women leave their protective style in for way too long at a time. This can lead to the hair underneath the weave becoming dry and when the weave is finally removed, hair breakage will be experienced. We have to realize that even though we can wash and condition the hair with a weave installed on it, it cannot be as effective because it is covered by the weave.

Take utmost care when taking out your weave
If you must remove your weave yourself, stay away from using sharp objects that can easily cut the hair with the weave. Make sure you can feel the thread before you cut. The best option is to go to the salon or get someone to help you take it out. I personally advise women to have a hair buddy. I do yours, you do mine! This not only helps to prevent hair loss but can eventually lead to saving money.
